Illegal Operation Error
This is caused by a corrupt mailbox file or files.
To correct this problem you need to delete 2 files.
NOTE! YOU WILL LOSE ANY EMAIL THAT YOU HAVE
ALREADY DOWNLOADED AND IS IN YOUR INBOX!!
The location of the files you need to delete depend on the version
of Netscape you are using;
If using Navigator v3.X:
In windows, go to the DESKTOP and 2click the MY COMPUTER icon
then 2click the C: DRIVE icon and look for the PROGRAM FILES folder
Then look for the NETSCAPE folder and finally the MAIL folder. Inside the
mail folder DELETE "inbox" and "inbox.snm".
If using Communicator v4.X
In windows, go to the DESKTOP and 2click the MY COMPUTER icon
then 2click the C: DRIVE icon and look for the PROGRAM FILES folder
Then look for the NETSCAPE folder, then 2click the USERS folder and
then the folder with your username. Inside that folder look for the MAIL
folder and 2click it. Inside that folder DELETE "inbox" and "inbox.snm".
Start Netscape and your email should be ok now.

the BOOKMARK you want to delete and press the DELETE key on your keyboard.
(NOTE: Once you delete a bookmark you can't get it back unless you know the
exact address)
PAGE FAULT
EXIT Netscape, then: In your Mail directory there is a file
INBOX (no extension) which you can open in a plain text editor such as
Notepad. If there are messages inside that you want to keep then rename
the file to inbox.old. If not then delete the INBOX and INBOX.SNM,
they will be rebuilt.
PASSWORD GRAYED OUT
To correct this, go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Passwords
and select User Profiles. Change the setting to "Users can customize
their preferences". This will require you to enter a user password when you
start Windows, but will also create a PL file that will allow you to save this
password as well as the password for the dialer.
Dial-Up Networking Refuses to Remember Passwords
Several users have reported that Dial-Up Networking will not remember
passwords. This behaviour manifests itself either by disabling the Save
Password checkbox, or by ignoring its setting. Although Microsoft will not
recognize this problem, it does exist and is due to a rather irritating bug in
Windows95's Dial-up Networking.
Solution #1:
Double-click on the Network icon in Control Panel, and choose the
Identification tab. Although the Workgroup and Computer Description
have no use in Dial-up Networking, the Computer Name must be your
login for your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make any necessary
changes, and press OK when finished. You'll have to restart Windows,
but once you're back in, try again. Double-click on your connection icon.
This time, your correct login will be in the login field, and you should be
allowed to type in your password. Remember to turn on Save Password
if it's not grayed out.
Note: If you don't have an Identification tab, see Installing and Coping
with Dial-Up Networking to make sure Dial-Up Networking is
installed correctly.
Solution #2:
Try re-creating the connection by opening up the Dial-Up Networking
Window and double-clicking on Add New Connection.
Solution #3:
Check out Microsoft's technical note regarding the disabled Save
Password option, as well as Microsoft's technical note describing
how the password isn't saved.
- submitted by Pete Dickson and Eliat B. Goldman
Solution #4:
Double-click on the Passwords icon in Control Panel, and click
on the User Profiles tab. Select Users can customize their
preferences..., choose the desired options below, and click OK.
Restart Windows95 - when asked for a username and password,
leave the password field blank. When asked if Windows95
should remember settings for this user, answer Yes.
- submitted by Raymond Chen
Solution #5:
Take a look at Add Scripting to Dial-up Networking.
Solution #6:
Occasionally, the Password List (pwl) files get corrupted - try deleting
(or renaming) all *.PWL files in your Windows directory.
- submitted by Paul Baio and Jean-Claude Terrier
Solution #7:
Refer to Installing and Coping with Dial-Up Networking to make sure
Dial-Up Networking and all the necessary components are
installed correctly. Note: try adding the Client For Microsoft Networks
into the network section of Control Panel if it's not already there.
- submitted by Dennis Brenner
Solution #8:
If you have more than one connection, and the password checkbox
is turned off for at least one, none of them will work.
- submitted by Paul Baio
Note: Some users have reported this behavior only after installing
Microsoft's Service Pack 1, which supposed to fix this problem.
PRINTING PROBLEM WITH LONG LINES
Unfortunately this is a problem that was discovered after Netscape
3.01 was released. This problem has been corrected in the upcomming
release of Netscape communicator. Meanwhile, you can save the
message to a file, open it in a word processor, use the features of
the word processor to word wrap the document and then print it.
- submitted by Richard Eaton
How do I decode and save multi-part messages?
Netscape 3.0 and earlier do not support direct decoding of multi-part images.
There are a couple of possibilities:
You can save all of the parts into files, and then use an external program
to do the decoding for you.
Or, you can save all of the parts into the same file, then edit that file with
a text editor to turn it into a single-part archive (by removing the extraneous
mail headers in the middle of the document.) For example: multi-select the
messages, and then select Save As... from the File menu. This will save all
the messages to a file in ``mail folder'' format. Then, edit that file with
your favorite text editor.
Once they're all in a single file, and the extra junk has been removed,
you can use Netscape to view it directly: simply name the file something
like file.jpg.uu (to tell Netscape that it is a uuencoded JPEG file) and
then open that file using Open File...
Is it possible to get my email from a computer other than my own?
Yes, to get email from a different computer, in Netscape, you need
to go to the OPTIONS menu then select MAIL & NEWS preferences then choose the
SERVERS tab. The 3rd line is POP3 Username. Change that to your TRAKNET email
username then click OK. Now, click on the envelope and after a few seconds a
box will popup that will ask for your password, just enter the password and it
will bring your email to that system.
I keep getting duplicate email or I'm not receiving my email. What's the problem?
The problem is that you are not letting your receipt of email finish. In the
rectangle next to the envelope you will see a darker colored progress
bar as you are receiving your email. Until that progress bar goes all
the way to the end and until the "!" disappears, you have not received
your email (as far as our end is concerned) and you WILL receive the
same email over and over. I have seen email take upwards to 60 minutes to
be totally received. Chances are you have a LARGE piece of email waiting
in your inbox.
My mailbox is full, how do I clean it out so I can start receiving email again?
Traknet now limits individual messages and total mailbox size to 10 megabytes.
This means any messages or attachments in your mail will not be received if the
message/attachment is over 10megs or you already have alot of email in your mailbox
and the additional email puts your mailbox over 10megs.
If you use Netscape v3.x; go to OPTIONS/MAIL & NEWSGROUPS and look for
the box that says, LEAVE MAIL on server and uncheck it and check the one that says
REMOVE MAIL from server.
If you use Netscape v4.x; go to EDIT/PREFERENCES then double click the MAIL
& NEWSGROUPS and then click the SERVERS option. Towards the top of the page,
you should see mail.traknet.com, to the right hand side of that window you will see either
an EDIT button or a PROPERTIES button, click that button and UNCHECK the box
that says "leave mail on server." Then "GET" your email. You will now receive ALL the
mail that was being held on our server (old mail you have already received) Your mailbox
is now cleared out and you can resume receiving email. You should also warn any of your
email friends that any messages over 10megs will be bounced.
